چکیده

Dra. Rita Delgado – Rua Borges Lagoa 1080 / 307 04038-002 São Paulo SP Brasil. E-mail: [email protected] Chordomas are slow-growing tumors with aggressive local behavior that probably originate from embryonic remnants of the notochord. This is a midline structure along the neural tube that presents involution and fragmentation as ossification of the axial skeleton occurs, in such way that in the second month of intrauterine life, it is restricted to the intervertebral discs, where the nucleus pulposus will appear. Other remnants of the notochord originating outside the discs and within the bones can be found in any topography long the vertebral column but they are preferably found in the sacrococcygeal region (50 to 60%) or in the sphenobasilar region (25 to 40% of the cases). In the remaining portion of the vertebral column (15%) the main localization is the cervix, especially the high cervical spine, followed by the lumbar spine. Chordomas of the thoracic spine are rare and usually present as extradural bone tumors that lead to complaints of pain by instability and intercostal radiculalgia or neurological changes in the lower limbs due to spinal cord compression. We report the case of a thoracic chordoma that presented as a pathological fracture and received a clinical and initial radiological diagnosis of vertebral metastasis.

An unusual case of pleural chordoma.

Chordoma is a rare slow-growing neoplasm arising from notochordal remnants. In the United States, the annual incidence of chordoma is 0.08 per 100,000 and is more common in men than in women. The most common locations of chordoma are the cranial (32%), spinal (32.8%), and sacral (29.2%) regions [1]. We report an unusual case of pleural chordoma in a 45-year-old man.

Giant Chordoma of the Upper Thoracic Spine with Mediastinal Involvement: A Surgical Challenge

Thoracic chordomas are very rare malignant tumours originating from notochordal remnants. These tumours develop within a vertebral body and enlarge involving the mediastinal compartment. Because of their slow-growing attitude, they become symptomatic only when they invade or compress the spinal cord and/or mediastinal organs. We present a rare case of a thoracic spine chordoma presenting with i...

Chondroid chordoma in an atypical location.

Chondroid chordoma is an extremely rare tumour with an annual incidence of around 0.1 cases per 100,000population. Involvement of the thoracic vertebrae may be present in 2-5% of cases. Definitive diagnosis usually requires a suitable distinction between this and other mesenchymal tumours such as chondrosarcomas, so immunohistochemical analysis is virtually mandatory. In spite of its slow-growi...

Thoracic intramedullary chordoma without bone involvement: a rare clinical entity

An 8-year-old boy presented with a 1-year history of low backache, followed by paraparesis and urinary incontinence. MRI of the thoracic spine revealed an intramedullary, intensely contrast-enhancing lesion extending from T11 to L1 vertebral level, consistent with astrocytoma, ependymoma or haemangioblastoma. A diagnosis of intramedullary chordoma was made on tissue biopsy and immunohistochemic...

Chordoma of a thoracic vertebra. A case report.

A 51-year-old woman presented with aspecific clinical symptoms of the thoracic spine. Radiological survey showed a tumour mass at T3-T4. Initial microscopic evaluation was suggestive of renal cell carcinoma metastasis. Lack of a primary tumour and revision of the specimens changed the diagnosis into chordoma.

Extra-axial chordoma.

A chordoma which occurs as a primary tumour outside the axial skeleton is known as an extra-axial chordoma, parachordoma or chordoma periphericum. It is extremely rare and therefore survival, recurrence and the rates of metastasis are not known. Whilst few recurrences have been described, the extra-axial chordoma has the potential for late recurrence at up to 12 years. Metastases are even less ...
